The 2016 Ford Edge

While it might not be the flashiest of SUVs on the road, the 2016 Ford Edge is one sweet ride. A few weeks ago I had the opportunity to play with a Ruby Red 2016 Edge Titanium. I’ve never driven an Edge before so I was quite excited to see the difference between the Edge and the Escape, which I used when I was in Thunder Bay a couple of months ago.

Let’s start with the eye-catching, bold, exterior of this vehicle. The raised beltlines, sharp angles, sleek sides and wrap-around rear lights give this car an agile, futuristic look.

There’s not much more I can say about the exterior, it’s a very nice looking car. Now the interior is where I can go on and on. One of the biggest complaints I hear from people is that their car doesn’t have enough storage. I doubt I’ll hear this with the Edge. There is a little storage bin in the dashboard, storage spaces on the centre console, storage areas in the doors and enough cup holders for the thirstiest of passengers.

I’ll save talking about the toys in the the front for later so lets hop into the back seat where you’ll find heated seats and more than enough legroom for the average man, woman and child, professional basketball players excluded. Ford also knows that your device battery running out is the stuff of nightmares for bloggers and teenagers alike, so they equipped the back seat with a 115-volt, 3-prong electrical outlet. Now sometimes you need to transport more than people so for those larger loads of cargo you can fold the 60/40-split folding rear seat down and you’ll have 73.4 cubic feet of cargo space. Not too shabby.

Another feature that my kids particularly enjoyed was the panoramic sunroof. It most cars, the sunroof doesn’t extend much farther than the front seat, making it hard for those in the back to get a good view of anything above. This is a problem we encounter often on late night drives, where my kids can’t really appreciate the view of the stars. The Edge’s sunroof offered an unobstructed view of the sky to everyone in the car, making this a very popular feature. However, the cynic in me thinks that the sunroof may not offer much protection in the event of a crash or rollover.

The 2016 Ford Edge is packed with great tech to make your drive much more enjoyable. First of all there’s a little pocket right in front of the gear stick that contained extra USB ports that can be used to either charge your phone, or use as auxiliary inputs. It also comes with Ford’s much touted SYNC3 technology which is a whole new system combining navigation, stereo, phone and a graphical app platform called AppLink.

The technology doesn’t just stop with entertainment.  The ones that impressed me the most were the safety features. First up is the Lane Keeping Assist System, basically this feature allows the car to know when you’re leaving your lane and will vibrate the steering wheel so you can steer back into your lane. leave your lane three times and a message with an image of a coffee cup pops up on the drivers display panel warning you that maybe you should pull over and get some rest.

Another impressive safety feature is the Blind Spot Information System which is a little light on the side mirrors that lights up whenever a vehicle was approaching on either side and in your blind spot. This way you know when it’s safe to change lanes.

My favorite feature was the Adaptive Cruise Control. We all know how cruise control works, right? You set your speed and the car maintains that speed. This works well on open roads with no traffic but Adaptive Cruise control makes it seem like you’re driving an autonomous vehicle. After setting the speed the car continues on as usual but If it approaches another vehicle in the same lane it actually slows itself down, and when the other car speeds up, the Ford Edge also speeds up all the while maintaining a safe distance between you and the car in front of you. It’s like the car had a mind of it’s own!

Now driving is fun, but what about parking? I know  from experience that a lot of drivers haven’t mastered that bit as yet. The Edge is also equipped with Enhanced Active Park Assist and Park Out Assist which takes over and parallel parks the vehicle for you and also steers you out of a parallel parking spot.

So I’ve laid out the features that I really liked about this vehicle and now would be the time to tell you about all the negatives, but in all honesty, I couldn’t find anything I didn’t like. The roomy cabin, soft leather seats, superb handling, SYNC3, safety features, parking assists and a very nice looking body make the Edge a very desirable car. It may not be classified as a luxury vehicle, but the 2016 Ford Edge isn’t too far behind.
