Our night at Mysteriously Yours Dinner Theatre & ticket giveaway

A few weeks ago I received an email from Mysteriously Yours Dinner Theatre inviting me to a special VIP Night to celebrate the official opening of their new show, Speakeasy. Unfortunately I couldn’t attend but the folks at the show went out of their way to accommodate me and my family by allowing us to attend on another night.

I’ve seen reviews written by other adults, but for this one I thought I’d do something a little differently. I asked my 15 year old daughter to write a guest post. I thought that since kids (10 years and older) can attend the show, it might be a little interesting to get a teenagers opinion.

So without further ado, here’s my daughter’s review:

Dinner theatre never sounded like something that I would find interesting.

It sounded cheesy, like something I would become bored with halfway through. I was sure that I wouldn’t particularly enjoy Mysteriously Yours’ ‘Speakeasy!’. That thought was at the forefront of my mind as we entered the theatre, but thanks to the engaging cast, and the entertaining script, my opinion was changed.

We entered the dining room, put on our name tags, and were shown to our table. At first, nothing seemed to really stand out. We ordered from the “Killer Apps”, “Main Events”, and “Just Desserts”, which I thought were clever names to the dinner courses. My dad, brother and I all ordered the braised boneless beef rib medallion, and while I’m not a fan of green beans (is anyone?), everything else on the plate was delicious. The beef was tender, the mashed potatoes creamy, and the gravy just tied it all together.Unfortunately the pictures I took of this dish weren’t, what my dad calls, “blog post friendly”.

My mom ordered the roasted chicken with olive caper sauce.  To me, the sauce looked and tasted more like an olive tapenade. Yes, I for one think that chicken is boring, but this was cooked perfectly, not dry at all. The tapenade-like topping was a nice burst of flavour.

A little while after dessert (a sea salt caramel brownie, which was amazing), different cast members began to come out and mingle with the audience.

They were all dressed in clothes from the Roaring 20’s, and were all convincingly in-character. All the actors were extremely entertaining, especially my personal favourite, Doc, akin to the eccentric Doc. Brown from Back to the Future. All the characters made a point of visiting every table, and were all enjoyable to interact with. While they chatted with us, they all made a point of dropping little hints as to who the killer might be.

The show started soon after, and was engaging and funny. Even though it was set in the 20’s, they still managed to squeeze in jokes about twerking and Rob Ford. One thing I especially liked was how we were given space on the back of our programs for “Clues”, which allowed us the chance to work out for ourselves who the killer was. As a 15 year old who enjoys murder-mystery shows and crime dramas, I relished the chance to use my own detective skills.

The show was exciting and fun all the way through, and I’d love the chance to puzzle over another one of Mysteriously Yours’ murder mysteries.
