My memory is so bad I can barely remember what I had for breakfast today, but, I do remember playing with Legos when I was around five years old. My dad had to come to Canada for a pretty serious operation and we stayed with some family in Oakville for a few months. One of the kids had a few Lego sets and I remember building houses all the time. By the time we went back to Trinidad I had become quite the Lego architect.
Fast forward to me as an adult and having my own kids. I first bought them Lego Duplo, and finally when they were old enough to stop trying to snack on them, I bought the real deal. First it was the big red tub, then another tub, and then the Millinenium Falcon and X-Wing Fighter from their Star Wars collection, which, my son built and has on a shelf in his bedroom.
A few days ago I had the opportunity to be at the North American International Auto Show when Ford announced a new partnership with Lego. Imagine being surrounded by reporters from all over the world and having quite a few of them loudly cheer when the new line of Lego sets were revealed.
On hand for the unveiling was Lego Speed Champion lead designer, Craig Callum, and Joe Hinrichs, Ford president, The Americas. The new sets are in the shape of the iconic Ford Mustang and the F-150 Raptor. The 185-piece Mustang set includes a time board and a little race car driver. The F-150 Raptor set is more complex. It includes 664 pieces, to build a garage, trailer, a drag racing Christmas tree and Model A hot rod. The F-150 set also includes a crew of little LEGO Ford workers.
“The LEGO Group is one of the world’s top toy companies, and is loved by children and adults around the globe,” said Mr. Hinrichs. “Many of us grew up playing with LEGO, so this is a dream project for all of us – including our engineers.”
The 185 piece Mustang set is expected to retail for $14.99. The more elaborate F-150 Raptor kit will be $49.99. They will go on sale in LEGO and Toy ‘R US stores on March 1, 2016.
